THE FOURTEEN HOLY HELPERS - DENIS

The Fourteen Holy Helpers are a group of saints venerated together in Roman Catholicism because their intercession was believed to be particularly effective against various diseases.

This group of "helpers in need" originated in 14th century Rhineland, due largely as a result of the epidemic that grew to become the Black Death, but their veneration spread almost as quickly as the plague.

According to Christian tradition, Saint Denis, also referred to as Dionysius, is a Christian martyr and saint.

He was Bishop of Paris in the third century and was martyred in connection with the Decian persecution of Christians when he was beheaded.

It is said that after his head was cut off, Denis is said to have picked it up and walked six miles, preaching a sermon the entire way.

He is the patron saint of Paris, France and also protects against headaches and his feast day is October 9th.
