IN THE COMPANY OF ANGELS

If I am the first to go

I will wait for you in the place

Where the crowns of Angels glow

If I go first because I lost the fight

I will be waiting with the Father

Where the tunnel opens into light

If I am the first one there

I will await you in lush meadows

Where heady perfume fills the air

If I go first and leave you lonely

We will meet again in paradise

In our loved one’s company

If I am the first to go, allay your fears

I will be waiting in the place

Where there are no more tears

If I go before you and we must part

I will wait for you in heaven

Where sweet music soothes the heart

If I am first to go, we will meet again

In a far better place than this

Where God has banished pain

If I go first through the eternal door

You will find me with the angels

Where suffering is no more

If I am first to go by days or years

You will find me waiting there

Far beyond this vale of tears

THE FOURTEEN HOLY HELPERS – GEORGE

The Fourteen Holy Helpers are a group of saints venerated together in Roman Catholicism because their intercession was believed to be particularly effective against various diseases.

This group of “helpers in need” originated in 14th century Rhineland, due largely as a result of the epidemic that grew to become the Black Death, but their veneration spread almost as quickly as the plague

Saint George was a Greek who became an officer in the Roman army.

His father was the Greek Gerondios from Cappadocia, Asia Minor, while his mother was from the city Lydda, which was a Greek city in Palestine dating from the times of the conquest of Alexander the Great.

It was ironic that George became an officer in the Roman army in the Guard of Diocletian who was ultimately the emperor who put him to death for his beliefs.

He has a great many Patronages around the world, as well as a wide range of professions, organizations and disease sufferers and domestic animals.

St Georges Day is celebrated on April 23rd.

DESIGN FOR LIFE

When you look out

Across the cityscape

The first impression is one of planning

With order and method

A systematic landscape

Above a thriving community

Running as a well-oiled machine

Every element doing its part

A symbiotic relationship

Every person a cog in the machine

A perpetual entity

Evolving and changing

Redesigning itself

Outside the conurbation

As if in stark contrast

The countryside and nature

Appear chaotic and haphazard

Without order or method

Simple and ordinary

Lacking the sophistication of civilization

But in reality, the urbanites live in chaos

Dysfunctional and self-destructive

While in nature there is structure and order

And the closer you observe it

The more of its complexities

And intricate structures are revealed

Everything precision engineered

With order and purpose

Every organism contains nature’s code

The building blocks of our world

And of our universe

True sophistication exists at every level

Complex and extraordinary

So let man builds his cities

While God builds everything else

THE SAINTS AND THE ANGELS

The Saints and the Angels

Watch over us all the year round

You never know they are there

For they never make a sound

But they are there nonetheless

Watching over us everyday

And they are there to listen

When you have a need to pray

And should some weary soul

Let slip their earthly bonds

They have angelic company

On their way to the great beyond

I WENT TO A FUNERAL TODAY

I went to a funeral today

What a totally depressing day

In was a humanist service

Cold and utterly soulless

With some mumbling buffoon

Waffling on in monotone

A couple of poorly read poems

From some well-thumbed tomes

And ended in a fit of irony

To the tune of “stay with me”

He was not religious I will concede

But even a man lacking a creed

Should be launched into oblivion

To the sound of a rousing requiem

YOU’LL NEVER WALK ALONE

He lived his life in the shadows

Hiding from Gods light

Not acknowledging his existence

Thinking he was out of sight

He thought he walked the road alone

Without the Lord by his side

But at the hour of his death

His faith could no longer be denied

On the darkness of this death

God lights a light to show his way

Shining his light of love

To comfort those left in disarray

As he walks in God’s light

Within the sound of Heavens bells

God illuminating his path

Now he walks with the angels

I WILL BE THERE

Do not grieve for me

Do not mourn my passing

Remember me with a smile

Don’t think of me as gone

Remember what we had

Think of our life like a favourite book

Do not close it and put it on the shelf

Never to be read again

Just because you hate the ending

Start to write the next chapter

Enjoy it like all the others

And don’t be sad

I will be there with you always

I will be there when the wildflowers

Dance in the spring meadow

When the summer breeze moves through

A field of ripening wheat

When the morning mist of autumn

Softens the landscape

And when the winter sun

Sparkles and glints on the snow

And I will be by your side

Through your loneliest hours

I will be there in the dawn

Rising with the sun

You will see me again

When the sun sets at the days end

And in the twilight hours

I will be that gentle breeze

That caress’s your cheek

On a warm summer evening

And I will be that tingle on your skin

As you lie in the quiet hours

I will be there when you retrace our steps

And when you stand on the lake shore

My reflection will not be on the water

By I am still with you

When you walk in the autumn

Through the golden carpet

I will be in the dancing leaves

And when the snow lays

Though I will leave no footprints

I am there for these moments that were ours

I will be there in the quietness of winter

Among the falling snowflakes

I will be in the dew drops

On the grassy meadow

I will be there in the warm sunlight

Of a summer’s day

I will be with you when the storm

Quickens your heartbeat

And you will feel me on your skin

And in the April showers

HE BELIEVES IN YOU

Humanists and atheists

Refute God’s existence

But in all honesty

They mount a futile resistance

Because for all their vehement

Creation of fuss

The great lord God

Believes in them as well as us

ON THE BLACK LAKE

John, in his boat one grey autumn day

Bobbing on the lakes black water

His heart gripped by blackness

As he sobbed for the loss of his daughter

His blood ran cold through his veins

As he stared at the dark water there

Water that would welcome him

And end a life filled with despair

John’s life was as empty as his heart

Now his dear little girl was gone

That sweet yellow haired angel

Without her he just couldn’t go on

Then calmness came upon the water

And he became suddenly aware

He was no longer alone in his boat

As he stared at the dark water there

The boat no longer bobbed on the lake

As he turned to look behind him

He saw God sitting in the stern

And on the shore stood two Seraphim

God sat with smiling countenance

His hair white as artic snow

His soft eyes just radiated love

And he emitted a warming glow

John stood silent before his god

As the boat drifted towards the shore

And the black despair which gripped him

Left his body through every pore

Then Gods eyes looked toward the land

To where his brace of angels stood

And John was moved to do the same

And in that instant, he understood

For stood between the angels

Was his sweet yellow haired girl

Her broken body once more whole

And a hallow sat above her curls

Though the heavenly father never spoke

John understood the meaning clear

His darling child made Cherubim was safe

And his time was not yet near

Then singing the songs of paradise

The Seraphim both ascended high

While his darling girl waved to him

And ascended herself into the sky

John turned towards the stern

As the boat bobbed on the lake again

But saw only an empty space

The king had returned to his domain

John, in his boat that grey autumn day

Bobbing on the lakes black water

Now felt at peace with himself

Though he still grieved for his darling daughter

The waters were not so black any more

And love displaced despair in his heart

Though he would always miss his angel

He knew they would not always be apart

A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH

Wear your smile

Enjoy Life

If only for awhile

Enjoy the moment

It’s a special gift

That’s heaven sent

Life and death

Are separated

By a single breath

Then more or less

In an instant

Nothing-ness?

Then the sight

At the tunnels end

Of heavens light

THE NINE WORTHIES

The Nine Worthies

Figures of history?

Men of scripture?

Men steeped in myth or legend?

Any or all might apply

But these figures personified

The chivalric ideals

Of the medieval world.

Three of the nine were pagans

Hector, Prince of Troy,

Slain by Achilles

Alexander the great

Conqueror of the world,

Julius Caesar,

Founder of a dynasty

Three of the nine were Jewish

Joshua, Apprentice of Moses

And leader of the Israelites

David, of the house of David,

Second King of Israel

Judas Maccabeus, leader

Of the Maccabean revolt

Three of the nine were Christian

King Arthur of Camelot,

Fair and just

Charlemagne, the first

Holy Roman Emperor

Godfrey of Bouillon, first ruler

Of the Kingdom of Jerusalem

These nine worthies

Were considered paragons

Of the ideals of chivalry

THE CHRISTENING

Nanny had unwrapped

The christening gown

Handed down through

The generations

Grandma hand-knitted

The booties

Laced them with

Pure white ribbon

The God parents

Presented a shawl

White as fallen snow

And we stood together

Beside the font

And welcomed him

Into the family of Christ

THE SUN RULES IN DAYLIGHT HOURS

The Sun rules in daylight hours

Shining light across the shadow

The Moon rules over the tides

In their perpetual ebb and flow

But God rules in the heavens

In benevolence over all below

FATHER, SON &

A Sunday school teacher asked her class,

“What was the name of Jesus' mother?”

One little child answered proudly “Mary”

The teacher said, “well done very clever”

The teacher then asked another question

“What was the name of Jesus' father?”

A boy called Terry answered “it’s Verge”

the teacher was Confused at the answer

She said, “that’s not the right answer”

Where did you get verge from Terry?”

The boy said, “Well you know everyone

Is always talking about Verge n' Mary

I AM SO BLESSED

I am so blessed

To have a family

A caring network

Who look after me

I am so blessed

To have with me

A circle of friends,

Who are like family

I am so blessed

To have in every way

God in my life

Each and every day

A SONG TO SING IN HEAVEN

A song to sing in heaven

Where the holy angel’s tread

So sang my heart in joy

The word of God was spread

OUT OF THE MOUTH’S OF BABES – THOU SHALT NOT

In our church’s Sunday school class our children

Have been learning about the Ten Commandments

After the class had studied hard about the first nine

They approached the last one with some confidence

The teacher asked the class if anyone could tell her

“What was the tenth commandment for a moral life”

Susie raised her hand, stood tall, and proudly quoted

“Thou shall not take the covers off the neighbor's wife”

WITHIN THE SILENT ECHO

Within the silent echo

Of the last rites

As the last words of life

Reluctantly give way

To the first words of death

God reaches out his hand

And you alluringly ascend

On comforting wings

GOD IS ON THE WEB

God is on the Web waiting for your prayer

You can easily find Him if you look around

There is no video link, Skype, or live chat

But if you have faith, it will be profound

Of course, if an atheist were to click the link

It would respond with “Page not found”

OUT OF THE MOUTH’S OF BABES – QUIET CLASS

A Sunday school teacher once asked her children

As they were on the way to their own church service

“Why is it necessary for us to be quiet in church?”

One girl replied “Because people are sleeping miss”

SIMPLY PHILOSOPHICAL # 1

The lion and the calf

Shall lie down together

But the calf will not

Get much sleep however

GOD SAT UPON HIS THRONE

God sat upon his throne

In the presence of the chosen

All was well in paradise

It was a special day in heaven

There was a quiet mutter abroad

And the flutter of Angels wings

Before a silent hush descended

And the heavenly chorus sings

WALK WITH GOD ALONG THE PATH OF LIFE

Walk with God along the path of life

When a spring is in your step

And at times when you must trudge

He will be your companion

So, feel the blood of life course

And feel his love course with it

With every beat of your heart

As you walk with God

OUT OF THE MOUTH’S OF BABES – PRAYER

Megan a little four-year-old was heard praying

Well, it was the Lord’s prayer that she was saying

And she said “And forgive us our trash baskets

As we forgive those who put trash in our baskets”

THE CHARGE OF THE DARK BRIGADE

The scroll of the seven seals

Rested in God's right hand

Until he bade his son

The Lion of Judah

To break the first seal

And the Lamb did so

And from the broken seal

Appeared a white horse

Bearing the conqueror

Carrying a bow,

And wearing a victor's crown

God then bade his son

The Lion of Judah

To break the second seal

And the Lamb did so

And from the broken seal

Appeared a red horse

Bearing the warrior

Carrying a sword

And wielding the power

To take peace from the world

God then bade his son

The Lion of Judah

To break the third seal

And the Lamb did so

And from the broken seal

Appeared a black horse

Bearing the bringer of famine

Carrying a set of scales

Finally, he bade his son

The Lion of Judah

To break the fourth seal

And the Lamb did so

And from the broken seal

Appeared a pale horse

Bearing a rider called death

LOVE OF GOD

Our God above loves us

So, we worship and adore him

His love sustains us all

OUT OF THE MOUTH’S OF BABES - CHILDISH GRACE

Catherine was having a dinner and some friends were invited

At the table, she turned to her six-year-old daughter and said

“Would you say grace?” “I don't know what to say,” she replied

“Just say what you hear Mummy say,” the husband then plied

The girl bowed her head and said thinking she was on a winner

“Oh Lord, why on earth did I invite all these people to dinner?”

ALL-TIME CLASSIC MOVIE FAVOURITES – JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR (1973)

Jesus Christ Superstar is based on the Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice Rock Opera of the same name, directed by Norman Jewison.

It tells the story of the final 6 days in the life of Jesus Christ (Ted Neeley) seen primarily through the troubled eyes of Judas Iscariot (Carl Anderson).

Being filmed entirely on location in Israel lends the film an authenticity and the anachronistic manner of the sets, with contemporary weapons on display, such as at the Temple Market work like a bridge spanning two thousand years.

The songs are memorable and well performed in particular by Ted Neeley (Jesus) Carl Anderson (Judas) Yvonne Elliman (Mary Magdalene) Barry Dennen (Pontius Pilate) and Josh Mostel (King Herod)

It’s a must watch movie whether spiritually inclined or not.

EASTER SUNDAY

Easter Sunday

Is the most important date

In the Christian calendar

And Celebrates

The Resurrection

Of Jesus Christ

And beginning

The Great Fifty Days

Of Eastertide

PASCHAL MYSTERY

The Paschal Mystery

Is a concept

Central to Christian belief

When God the Father

Sent his only Son to Earth

To accomplish man’s salvation

Via the passion, death,

And Resurrection

Of Jesus Christ

EASTER ISN’T JUST ABOUT EASTER EGGS

Easter isn’t just about Easter eggs

I have a far deeper meaning in mind

Easter marks the death and resurrection

Of the saviour of all mankind

EASTERTIDE

Eastertide or Paschaltide

Is a festal season

That begins on Easter Sunday

And lasts for fifty days

Ending on Pentecost Sunday

Celebrated throughout

The Christian world

As a single joyful feast

ALL-TIME CLASSIC MOVIE FAVOURITES – THE ROBE (1953)

The Robe, Directed by Henry Koster, is set in the Roman province of Judea during the 1st century, where Roman tribune Marcellus Gallio (Richard Burton) is ordered to crucify Jesus of Nazareth, but is tormented by his guilty conscience in the aftermath.

After the Crucifixion he gets drunk and wins Jesus' homespun robe and suffers nightmares and delusions after the event.

After a period of time in Rome he hopes to find a way to live with what he has done, and although still not believing in Jesus as a Messiah, he returns to Palestine to try and learn what he can of the man he killed.

It’s a poignant script powerfully acted by Burton, while the lovely Jean Simmons is incredible as the young woman he loves, Diana. Michael Rennie is a quiet but forceful Peter, but Jay Robinson steals the picture as the depraved Emperor Caligula, and as he normally did Victor Mature played himself as Demetrius and there were a host of competent performances in the minor roles.

The cinematography is quite magnificent filmed in Cinemascope, while the film is graced by Alfred Newman beautifully and eerily haunting musical score.

A very watchable movie that stands the test of time but is not given the exposure it so richly deserves, perhaps because programmers are of a more secular bent.

GOOD FRIDAY

Good Friday

Marks the day

The Temple Guards

Aided by the Judas kiss

Arrested Jesus

At Gethsemane

Also, his interrogation

By High Priest Caiaphas

And the Sanhedrin

Who condemned him to death

Before conveying him before

The Roman governor

Pontius Pilate

Who with reluctance

Ordered his crucifixion

At the place of the Skull

ONE OF THE TWELVE - JUDAS ISCARIOT

Judas Iscariot

The betrayer

The taker of coins

The lost soul

Satan’s pawn

Hanged himself

Replaced as an apostle

By Matthias

IT'S SAD THAT IN DEMOCRATIC AMERICA

It's sad that in Democratic America

That Black Friday gives them more of a lift

Than Good Friday, as they are more

Interested in bargains than the greatest gift

FOR A FEW SILVER COINS

One of the twelve

Chosen Apostles

Possessed of Evil?

Or pawn of Christ

Judas Iscariot met

High Priest Caiaphas

And left the temple

With the Sanhedrin bribe

“Thirty pieces of silver”

Bought an apostle

And Christ’s fate was sealed

For after the last supper

In the gardens of Gethsemane

Judas Iscariot delivered

His kiss of betrayal

Condemning them both

By that single act

To an untimely death

Judas by his own hand

And Christ on the cross

THE SHADOW OF GOLGOTHA

Our lord beaten and bloody

Must die like a criminal

To add insult upon injury

Atop his tousled curls

Was set a thorny crown

Pressed into his scalp

He carried his cross

Upon his bloodied back

Through narrow streets

To the baying of the crowds

Then onto the hill of Calvary

Where the prince of peace

Was nailed to his cross of pain

And dealt the final blow

His side pierced by a spear

His earthly life ebbing away

Through the open wound

He called out to God

But not for vengeance

He asked that they be forgiven

And his cross of pain

Cast a Holy shadow

Across the world

That reached every corner

But the shadow cast

Was not one of darkness

But one of light

A divine light

The light of love

Which still shines today

For it is the eternal light of God

IN THE SHADOW OF THE CROSS

When the world

Appears a troubled place

When you see pain

Etched into every face

Look for hope

In the shadow of the cross

When evil lives

In the hearts of man

When our neighbours

Plot our destruction

Look for hope

In the shadow of the cross

When you are burdened

With anxiety and fear

When you are so desperate

For someone to hear

Look for Him

In the shadow of the cross

ALL-TIME CLASSIC MOVIE FAVOURITES – THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD (1965)

The Greatest Story Ever Told, directed by George Stevens and David Lean, although for some reason the latter was uncredited.

It is an often under-rated movie with an all-star cast, and is a large scale epic movie that chronicles the life and ministry of Jesus Christ (Max von Sydow).

There are so many stars in this biblical epic that it is impossible to mention them all but among the notable performers were Dorothy McGuire (The Virgin Mary) Charlton Heston (John the Baptist) Martin Landau (Caiaphas) Sal Mineo (Uriah) Sidney Poitier (Simon of Cyrene) David McCallum (Judas Iscariot) Donald Pleasence (The Dark Hermit – Satan) Claude Rains (King Herod) and John Wayne (Centurion at Crucifixion).

I can highly recommend the modestly titled epic, which was long, beautifully photographed and was notable as it was the first english-language film for Max von Sydow.

A great, if not the greatest, movie, watch and enjoy.
